What the market tape means and when it updates

Figures shown are the latest source releases checked on 13 October 2026, not second-by-second quotes. UK business energy is DESNZ’s all-band average paid in April–June 2026; world business averages are GlobalPetrolPrices’ July–September 2026 figures. The approximate GBP conversions use the ECB reference rate for 12 October. The periods, tax treatment and usage profiles differ, so the percentage gaps are broad guides, not a quote for a particular farm. UK diesel is DESNZ’s national pump-price average for the week beginning 5 October; the world retail average is GlobalPetrolPrices for the same date and includes country taxes and subsidies. Fertiliser values are World Bank September references: urea (Eastern Europe/Middle East), DAP (US Gulf) and potash (Brazil landed); they are not delivered UK merchant quotes. UK grain and livestock prices link to AHDB because its series may have reuse conditions. Ofgem wholesale charts are separate from business bills. These are dated reference points, not live quotes; the tape needs a new source refresh to change. Find a livestock market

The mart map

Find auction marts and check sale dates, stock categories and entry requirements directly with the market before travelling.

Directory links do not guarantee a sale is running. Confirm schedules, movement rules and buyer access with the mart.

A little levity from the paperwork pile

The Golden Clipboard

A regular, clearly satirical award for the form, rule or official letter that makes a farmer ask: “You’re having a laugh, right?”

Nominations welcome ↘
Satire · not official guidance

One clipboard.
One heroic level
of red tape.

Because the paperwork never arrives without a sequel.

This week's imaginary winner

“Please attach the form confirming you have already attached the form.”

A made-up example of admin absurdity, not a real government requirement. Send us your real-world nomination and, if you can, a link or redacted photo so we can check the details before publishing.

Illustrative joke · not a real submission
A farmer-built reference shelf

The Field Guide

The “Wikipedia for farmers” idea, built carefully: useful pages, dated sources, clear regional labels and a visible update history. Start with a small, dependable shelf; invite corrections instead of pretending every page is complete.

Grants & schemes

Check which nation the scheme covers, who can apply, eligible costs, match funding and the closing date. Use the official scheme page as the final word; rules change.

Markets & margins

Every price note should name the market, date or week, unit and source. A national average is context, not a guaranteed price for your stock.

Machinery & kit

Record make, model, age, hours, known faults, parts availability and real running costs. Label owner-submitted experience as anecdote, not an independent test.

Livestock & welfare

Link to current official guidance and reputable sector sources. For an animal’s health or welfare, contact your vet or the relevant authority; this guide is not a diagnosis.

Editorial rule: every guide page should show its region, last-checked date and sources. Readers can suggest edits; an editor checks them before they become guidance.
Farming politics · plain English, receipts included

Who promised what?

A strong farmer’s voice should challenge the government and test every party’s promises. The politics can be sharp; the facts need to be solid.

Policy watch · starting framework

What changed? Who pays? What reaches the farm gate?

Each policy explainer will separate the announcement from the rules, the minister’s claim from the practical impact, and England-only schemes from devolved policy. We’ll link to primary documents and show what is still unanswered.

  • Track promises, deadlines and delivery.
  • Show evidence and competing views.
  • Ask farmers what the change means on the ground.
1. What is the decision?

Link to the bill, scheme rules, official announcement or parliamentary record.

2. Who feels it?

Explain likely effects across farm types and nations without claiming one farm speaks for all.

3. What happens next?

Set a follow-up date and check whether the promise became a working policy.
